The Boiler Rooms

Empty boiler room

An empty boiler room seen from above.

When the Queen Mary arrived in California in December 1967, she was to be converted into a floating "Museum of the Sea". This would mean the clearing out of most of the machinery from her engine and boiler rooms to make enough space for this. Unfortunately, more space was cleared than the Museum ended up using, and the only boiler rooms which remain today are stripped out ones. Boiler bed

The remains of a boiler bed.

The boilers were attached to the floor of the Queen Mary by big steel frames. When the boilers were removed in 1967, only the frames they sat on were left, and they are still there today.
