Originally the Queen Mary had two engine rooms, five boiler rooms, and two turbo-generator rooms. The aft engine room is all that remains. Originally it drove the two inner propellers on the ship. The forward engine room (now gone) drove the outer two. All the boilers on the ship - for both engine rooms - have been removed, so there is no steam today to drive these huge turbines.

The Engine Room Looking Forward

Taken looking forward between the two turbines. You can see the controls in the distance. The turbines have not turned since 1967.

On the left of the photo, through the glass panel, you can see the reduction gear: a gearbox to reduce the high turbine revs to a slower speed to drive the propeller shafts.

The Engine Room Looking Aft

This shot is taken looking back from the control panel towards the stern of the ship. The red-cased object in the foreground is a turbine, the black object left of it is also a turbine, but with its heat protection still on.

The Controls For The Aft Engine Room

Here, the amount of steam going to each turbine was controlled by the large wheels (connected to steam valves) you can see in the picture. The digital counter on the right measured the number of turns each propeller shaft made in a day.

Telegraph

"Finished With Engines". How True!

Instructions from the officers on the Bridge were transmitted to the engine rooms via these telegraphs.

Rev Counter

One of the Prop Shaft Rev-counters.
