The Queen Mary's hull is in good shape for a 60 year old. Not surprising when you think that the metal she is made of is rarely less that an inch thick.
Inside the bow of the ship.
The very front part of the ship was used for storage. Here, the ship gradually narrows to a point, and ends at the front or "stem" casting, which is up to 4 inches thick in places. It is 130 feet long and had to be made in five pieces, as a one piece casting would have contracted by over 24 inches during cooling.
