Queen Mary Model

A little background about the model. It began as the Sterling Freighter kit but soon evolved into the QM.

I started building it about 5 years ago. As you may be able to tell, I have not finished it, but it is close.

It is fully radio controlled although it only has two propellers. Each prop is powered by a 12 volt motor which in turn is powered by an "alarm system" wet cell. Needless to say she's not underpowered. All the main pieces are scratch built. The main source for plans is Ross Watton's book "The Queen Mary". But I have a variety of other sources.

Ladders, bits and other fittings come from Blue Jacket ship crafters in Maine.

The ship was "launched" this past summer at Eisenhower park, Hempstead New York. We had quit a crowd. We toasted the launch with champagne (non-alcoholic). She glided wonderfully through the water.

Although I have taken her out a few times since, her time on the water is limited. She's tough to move around at over 4 feet. And the possibility of her foundering is enough to keep me awake the night before we sail. So she stays safely mounted to the wall and I am content with an occasional voyage.
